Financial Literacy App
CanDoIQ
CanDoIQ is a small startup, as the Manager of Creative services, I was spearheading the design and implementation of the CanDoIQ mobile app. I worked with a small team with varying skill levels. This led to creative designs and flexibility thought the design process.

CanDoIQ is a life literacy startup making digestible content on “adulting” skills. The goal is to educate young adults in financial and life literacy through online videos and resources. Many young adults spend the majority of their online time on their phone. Keeping this in mind, it became clear that having a mobile app was paramount to the longevity of the product.
Background
Process: Sketching
I initially sketched out the rough ideas for the app design and then presented these to my team as well as the CEO. The goal was to get the general idea of the layout and screens needed for the app to be functional.

Process: Low Fidelity Prototyping
After feedback from the team, I created low fidelity wireframes that included general layout and color. I have found that giving a few options is the best way to help clients decide, so I gave my team 2-3 option for each page. My team is small, and most are not designers, so it was important to meet them where they are at. I created wireframes in PowerPoint for more accessibility for my team members. I also worked to introduce Figma to the team in hopes to use it fully in a future project.

Process: Selecting Designs
Through iteration we took the elements we liked best and came up with an initial design. My coworker who oversaw designing the high-fidelity prototype app was unfamiliar and uncomfortable with Figma – which I initially thought would be our main method for app design. I opted to meet my team member where they were at and used lower fidelity tools. For example, creating wireframes on PowerPoint so that the team member could access and use the editable files, then recreate the design choices using the app building platform they were comfortable with.

Chosen Overall Design Prototypes
Takeaways
This project taught me so much. Most importantly it was my first opportunity to be in a leadership position in the working world. I learned how to manage expectation from my superiors and also manage my team through the project. I learned that sometimes a lower fidelity tool or prototype will work to get us to the finish line and meet project expectations.
Moving forward I will take this experience and apply the lessons I have learned. I continue to work on this project currently and we hope to launch the app in the coming months. At launch my initial design ideas will be present on most screens and were integral to the design process.
